Chasing tail in Eastern Oregon

Saturday, November 10, 2007

It's been a wild ride - in less than one month, I quit one job, moved 300 miles, and started a new job. I'm glad for that ordeal to be over, and am looking forward to settling in. Part of that is exploring my new home, and what better place to start than the river 10 minutes from my office...

I buzzed a few miles down river, and pulled over at a likely looking run. I about tripped over myself running back up to the pickup when I saw a large fish rolling just at the "v" in this tailout.

I rigged up and then proceeded to swing and step down river towards the fish. I actually had it boil under my fly several times before I saw that it was a dark fish, and when I got closer I learned it was a gnarly spawned out coho. I reeled in and just spent a few minutes watching this hen hold on her redd.

It rained last night, and hopefully we'll get some more over the next few weeks to bring the steelies in. I'd better get some more granola bars, as I won't have time for a sandwich during lunch...
