Chasing tail in Eastern Oregon

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

I've got a trip in just under two weeks with the boys, but with all of the fevered chat between us I've been dying to get out. Reading some of the recent reports hasn't been helping either - overcast days, temps in the 60's, and scores of March Browns on the water.

So, when the river had been running consistently at 5700 cfs and work was somewhat calm on Monday, I bolted out of the house late Sunday night, rolled into Pine Tree just in time to nurse a beer, check out the stars and spent the night in the truck listening to the river.

Monday morning was chilly - not a cloud in the sky, which resulted in temps in the low 20's. Blue winged olives were coming off, size 20 and 22's, but not splashy rises.

The day started heating up though, and by 10 AM I was down to the t-shirt and regretting the fact that I didn't bring sunscreen as the weather was supposed to be 60ish and overcast. It was easily 70 and bright sun.

Some gave all

I did manage to pick up a few trout, mostly smaller fish, and not the big bruisers that put that smile on your face and make you sit and laugh after releasing.

The March Browns never quite materialized - chatting with one of the guides from Maupin, who was on the river to do some filming, she indicated that yesterday was "epic." Of course it was, I wasn't there...

Oh well, that's fishing.

Looking forward to the trip with the boys, and until then I'll be dreaming of the river.
